Kuragala Temple
Kuragala Temple is an ancient Buddhist cave monastery complex located in Balangoda, in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province. The site sits along the Balangoda-Kaltota road, about 24 km from Balangoda town, atop rocky terrain featuring caves and natural rock formations. It has deep archaeological and religious significance, being formally declared an archaeological reserve.
The area is notable for its confluence of natural and historical features. There are drip-ledged caves used by monks, Brahmi inscriptions dating back to the 2nd century BC, carved stone steps, platforms, and ancient stupas. The landscape supports forested flora and provides habitat for bird species and small wildlife, enhanced by the cool mountain air and mist in the cave areas.
Visitors can explore the cave shelters, inscriptions, ancient monastic ruins, and the stupa at the summit. The climb involves walking up stone stairways and pathways carved into the rock. The surroundings offer panoramic views over valleys and reservoirs. The site is both a place of pilgrimage and archaeological interest, attracting those interested in history, Buddhism, and nature.
Kuragala is accessible year-round by road from Balangoda via Kaltota, with a short hike required from parking areas. The dry season offers more comfortable conditions; during heavy rains the paths may become slippery and caves wetter. Permissions and respect for the site’s protected status are important, as the temple is part of Sri Lanka’s initiative to conserve ancient monuments.
