Over het district Hambantota

Hambantota is een landelijke stad in het zuidoostelijke kustgebied van Sri Lanka. Het is tevens de hoofdstad van het district Hambantota in de Zuidelijke Provincie van Sri Lanka. Hambantota ligt op ongeveer 240 km van Colombo en ondergaat momenteel een transformatie tot een strategische haven en commercieel centrum, met een uitgebreide infrastructuurontwikkeling. Omgeven door uitgestrekte zandstranden is Hambantota een gunstige uitvalsbasis om bezienswaardigheden in de omgeving te bezoeken.

Het Bundala National Park ligt 20 km ten oosten van Hambantota en het Wirawila Sanctuary iets verderop. Het Ruhuna National Park en de Kataragama-tempel zijn andere attracties die gemakkelijk vanuit deze stad te bereiken zijn.

Over de Zuidelijke Provincie

De Zuidelijke Provincie van Sri Lanka is een klein geografisch gebied dat bestaat uit de districten Galle, Matara en Hambantota. Landbouw en visserij vormen de belangrijkste bron van inkomsten voor de overgrote meerderheid van de bevolking in deze regio.
