Over Galle District
Galle is een stad gelegen op de zuidwestelijke punt van Sri Lanka, op 119 km van Colombo. Galle is het beste voorbeeld van een versterkte stad gebouwd door Europeanen in Zuid- en Zuidoost-Azië, en toont de wisselwerking tussen Europese bouwstijlen en Zuid-Aziatische tradities. Het fort van Galle staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst en is het grootste overgebleven fort in Azië, gebouwd door Europese bezetters. Galle is een aanzienlijke stad, naar Sri Lankaanse maatstaven, met een bevolking van 91.000 inwoners, waarvan de meerderheid van Singalese afkomst is. Er is ook een grote Sri Lankaanse Moorse minderheid, met name in het fortgebied, die afstamt van Arabische handelaren die zich in de oude haven van Galle vestigden. (Hoewel Galle een oude stad is, is er vrijwel niets bewaard gebleven van vóór de Portugese invasie.) Tijdens de Portugese periode waren er twee beroemde Singalese dichters: Andare, afkomstig uit Dickwella, en Gajaman Nona, afkomstig uit Denipitiya in het district Matara. Zij schreven gedichten over de gewone man.
